  • Role Overview

We're seeking a versatile QA/QC Specialist to bolster our quality assurance efforts in a dynamic structural steel fabrication shop on the path to AISC certification. This hands-on role reports to Operations leadership and focuses on proactive problem-solving, in-process inspections, and cross-team collaboration to minimize issues and drive efficiency. You'll play a key part in maintaining compliance with AWS D1.1 and AISC standards, including coordinating annual audits and certification processes. By blending creative troubleshooting with meticulous documentation and program oversight, you'll help transform quality into a strategic advantage, supporting our growth in high-volume fabrication.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Lead inventive troubleshooting for weld details, fabrication conflicts, and shop-floor challenges, developing efficient, code-compliant solutions that go beyond conventional methods while ensuring quick, cost-effective resolutions.

    • Manage document control for third-party inspections, internal records, and certification-related paperwork, including root cause tracking and continuous improvement initiatives aligned with EOS principles to reduce reworks.

    • Conduct and support high-volume in-process inspections (welds, fits, dimensions) using standard tools, gauges, and basic NDT methods (e.g., visual, UT, MT) across multiple fabricators.

    • Collaborate with detailing coordinators, CNC operators, shop foremen, project managers, and purchasing teams to preempt issues through RFIs, design assists, and early interventions.

    • Oversee and coordinate AISC certification maintenance, including annual audits (shop and office sides), ensuring all processes meet AISC Code of Standard Practice and related requirements.

    • Mentor junior inspectors or shop QC personnel, while developing scalable QA protocols and training programs to build team capability as we expand.

    Qualifications & Requirements

    • 3+ years of QA/QC experience in steel fabrication, preferably in an AISC-certified or certification-pursuing environment.

    • Proven creative problem-solving in fabrication settings, with examples of non-standard repairs that balance compliance (AWS D1.1, AISC 360), speed, and cost.

    • Expertise in welding inspection (visual and basic NDT), blueprint interpretation, and core fabrication processes (e.g., cutting, bending, assembly).

    • Certifications: AWS CWI (Certified Welding Inspector) preferred or commitment to obtain within 6-12 months; familiarity with ASNT NDT levels (e.g., UT Level II) a plus.

    • Proficiency in document management and digital tools (e.g., Tekla EPM/EPM Go, Bluebeam, MS Office for tracking).

    • Strong understanding of AISC certification processes, including audit coordination, documentation standards, and ongoing compliance maintenance.

    • Excellent communication and coordination skills, with potential for mentoring and cross-functional leadership.

    • Physical ability to work in a shop environment (standing, lifting up to 50 lbs, navigating fabrication areas).

    • Alignment with core values: Excellence, Thrive or Die, Teamwork.

    Ideal Candidate Profile

This role demands a blend of hands-on technical acumen and administrative diligence in a fast-paced fabrication shop where challenges vary daily. You're someone who excels at quick, out-of-the-box thinking to resolve fabrication issues on the floor, yet maintains the organizational tenacity to handle detailed documentation, audits, and program oversight. Energized by collaboration, you build consensus across teams, mentor emerging talent, and drive proactive improvements. Detail-focused but action-oriented, you evaluate options swiftly, ensure code compliance without rigidity, and take full ownership to turn potential disruptions into streamlined operations. In essence, you're a practical innovator who thrives on turning quality hurdles into opportunities for excellence.
